Biography

Jamie D. Vogel is a litigation associate with significant experience representing individual and commercial clients in complex litigation matters in state and federal courts. She has counseled clients during all phases of litigation and has experience in a wide range of high profile matters, including entertainment disputes, contested probate and trust litigation, real estate litigation, and commercial business disputes.

Prior to joining Miller Barondess, Jamie was a litigation associate at the Los Angeles office of a prominent international law firm. She received her J.D. from the University of Southern California Law School, where she was a USC Law Merit Scholarship recipient and a member of USC’s National Moot Court team. During the last two years of law school, she also worked as a Certified Law intern at the USC Post-Conviction Justice Project, where she represented inmates at parole hearings and re-sentencing proceedings. During her time at USC, she also helped author a legislative bill for juvenile justice reform as part of her work as an advocate at USC Law’s Legislative Policy Practicum.

Jamie received a B.A. in English, with an emphasis in Creative Writing, a B.A. in Neuroscience, and a minor in Psychology from the University of Southern California and graduated summa cum laude. Prior to law school, she studied Swahili and spent three months in Tanzania teaching HIV/AIDs education and also studied neuroscience and Scottish literature at the University of Edinburgh. Jamie served two terms as President of Spirits in Action, USC’s version of the Special Olympics and annual celebration of children with special needs.

Notable Representations

Trial Experience:

Served as second chair during a three-month jury trial on behalf of Katy Perry against hotel developer for slander of title and intentional interference with contract, which resulted in two jury verdicts against defendant on all causes of action and combined awards of more than $15.5 million in compensatory and punitive damages. Over the course of two years leading up to trial, assisted with extensive dispositive motion practice, discovery disputes, interlocutory appeals, and petitions for writ of mandate.
Served as second chair in an administrative trial before the Relocation Assistance Appeals Board, asserting claims against the California Department of Transportation for refusals to reimburse clients’ relocation expenses in excess of $16 million.
Served as third chair in an eminent domain trial, which settled on the eve of trial and resulted in the largest payment for loss of business goodwill in the history of the state of California and, in total, an eight-figure payment as just compensation for the taking.

Representative Matters:

Successfully obtained dismissal of two tort actions filed in Kentucky state and federal courts against entertainer Kathy Griffin, which dismissal was upheld on appeal by the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals.
Represented two actors in an entertainment matter arising from claims for idea-theft and breach of implied contract against a foreign municipality, which eliminated the need for a public lawsuit and resulted in a seven-figure settlement before litigation was initiated.
Represented son of real estate developers in a case alleging novel claims for interference with expected inheritance, breaches of fiduciary duty, and fraud in connection with parents’ $6 billion estate.
Represented daughter of investor and philanthropist in a probate matter involving a $2 billion estate.
Successfully moved to disqualify estate counsel and a national law firm on six independent grounds, which was upheld on appeal in a 17-page order issued the day after oral argument before the California Court of Appeal.
In a contentious real estate dispute against Jerry Bruckheimer, successfully opposed a motion to disqualify Greenberg Traurig as trial counsel of record.
Obtained summary judgment on novel issues in favor of medical device manufacturer in two matters in California state court involving claims for products liability, negligence, manufacturing defect, wrongful death, and loss of consortium arising from the use of medical devices designed, sold, labeled, and distributed by the manufacturer.

Pro Bono

During the COVID-19 pandemic, initiated litigation and successfully obtained a broad-sweeping injunction preventing a realtor from selling, encumbering, making representations to third parties, or taking any action that interferes with a Veteran’s use and possession of her childhood home.
Represented a Veteran in post-judgment proceedings to collect a $9,000 judgment following a small claims trial to recover the Veteran’s vehicle, which was stolen by defendants when the client was called to active duty.
Assisted with investigation and drafting of a habeas petition for post-conviction relief for a death-row inmate in Arizona, including traveling to Arizona for interviews with the incarcerated client, trial counsel, jurors, and witnesses.
Assisted with fact investigation and legal analysis concerning the executions of death-row inmates who were wrongfully convicted.
