Biography

For more than a decade, Lauren M. Brody has litigated some of the most consequential business, entertainment, and public-interest disputes in California and across the country.  A trusted advisor to Fortune 500 companies, start-ups, public entities, and high-profile individuals, Lauren has a proven record of navigating bet-the-company cases from pre-suit investigation through verdict and appeal.  Lauren’s practice spans complex commercial litigation, intellectual property and trade secret matters, employment and civil rights claims, class actions, high-stakes contract disputes, and white-collar criminal defense.  In addition to her trial work, Lauren has counseled businesses on risk management, internal investigations, crisis response, and litigation avoidance, and has significant appellate experience including arguing cases in the California Court of Appeals as well as the Second and Ninth Circuits.

Lauren earned her Juris Doctor degree at UC Berkeley School of Law, where she graduated Order of the Coif and was an editor on the California Law Review and Berkeley Journal of Gender Law and Justice.  Prior to joining Miller Barondess, Lauren worked in the New York office of a large, commercial litigation firm and at an appellate boutique.  Before that, she clerked for Judge G. Murray Snow in the District of Arizona and Judge Mary H. Murguia on the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals.  Lauren also teaches 1L Legal Writing & Advocacy at the University of Southern California (USC) Gould School of Law.

Notable Representations
  • Obtained dismissal with prejudice for a national media company based on argument that disputed trademark infringement was a First Amendment protected parody use.
  • Secured dismissal with prejudice on statute of limitations grounds of 14 counts of trade secret misappropriation and successfully defended the decision before the appellate court.
  • Defended consumer products companies in nationwide class actions involving claims of unfair trade practices and deceptive advertising.
  • Represented bankruptcy trustee in litigation to recover more than $500 million from participants in a nationwide Ponzi scheme to reimburse thousands of vulnerable victims for their losses.
  • Represented luxury hotel against competitor for claims of corporate espionage, unfair business, and theft of trade secrets.
